The assessment is built on the same readiness framework Mahlum Innovations uses during the first phase of every client engagement — the "R" (Readiness) phase of the RAPID Framework. It's designed to give leadership teams a fast, honest read on where they actually stand before investing in AI initiatives.

What We Measure

• Data Maturity (30% weight) — Quality, volume, centralization, data governance, and the strength of your existing data foundations. This is the most heavily weighted dimension because poor data quality causes 58% of AI project failures (McKinsey, 2025).
• Technical Readiness (25% weight) — Cloud infrastructure, API availability, and process automation maturity. Determines which AI approaches and AI models are viable without a major infrastructure investment first.
• Team & Culture (20% weight) — In-house AI expertise, leadership commitment, and organizational openness to AI-driven change. A technically sound system will fail without these.
• Strategic Alignment (15% weight) — Whether you have clearly defined AI use cases, committed budget, and executive sponsorship. Strategy-less AI adoption has a 3x higher failure rate.
• Governance & Risk (10% weight) — Privacy policies, compliance frameworks, and change management plans. Critical for regulated industries.

Readiness Tiers Explained

• Foundational (0–39): Focus on data infrastructure and a small, well-scoped pilot before broader AI investment.
• Developing (40–59): Strong foundation. Address key gaps in one or two dimensions before scaling.
• Ready (60–79): Well-positioned for production AI. Prioritize use cases by ROI and run an initial engagement.
• Advanced (80–100): AI-mature organization. Focus on scaling existing wins and exploring frontier capabilities.

What Comes After the Assessment

The assessment is a starting point. Organizations that score Foundational or Developing typically benefit most from an AI strategy engagement to create a roadmap. The most common gap we surface in Foundational organizations is an inadequate data foundation — siloed, inconsistent, or inaccessible data that AI models cannot reliably learn from. Building data readiness before deploying AI is consistently more effective than attempting to resolve data quality problems mid-project.
